Kodak EasyShare V610 Review

When the first rumours about a new Kodak Easy-Share dual lens camera with CCD went around, the attention was drawn quickly. Indeed, Kodak introduced a digital camera with these techniques not long afterwards. The EasyShare V570 was a camera which had an extra wide-angle lens and a standard 3x optical zoom. The concept was on hand and Kodak got to work to apply this technique in a new digital camera: the 6.1 Megapixel Kodak EasyShare V610. The Kodak V610 digital camera is fairly compact and has a sleek design. Having a resolution of 6.1 Megapixel, which is considered more or less standard nowadays, the Kodak EasyShare V610 ensures enough image information to make a poster size print. The Kodak V610 is designed for a wide target group of consumers who are looking for a user friendly digital camera, where the main thing is ease and at the same time innovation. As far as the housing goes, not much has changed compared to the EasyShare V570: only the back has undergone a small facelift.

The Kodak V610 is one of the smallest extended zoom cameras in the world, and they still managed to fit two lenses in the thing. And Bluetooth! What will they think of next? Hot on the heels of Kodak's dual lens V570 (and Panasonic's extremely small, extended zoom TZ1 model), the V610 throws in everything but the kitchen sink. The 6 megapixel CCD and large 2.8 inch LCD display would be good enough for a typical camera, but the V610 isn't a typical camera. The two lenses give it an arresting look, as well as a huge 10x optical zoom. Bluetooth wireless technology allows for short-range transfer of images from camera to computer or printer with ease. All this in a camera with a slick Art Deco style that's only 0.9 inches thick! The Kodak EasyShare V610 has plenty of flair and features to make your photography interesting. Keep in mind however, the V610 lacks the optical image stabilization that made the Panasonic TZ1 so appealing.

Kodak V610 - 38-380mm Dual lens

Where Kodak's introduction of the first dual-lens in the world surprised the digital camera market, Kodak went ahead and did it all over again by introducing the Kodak EasyShare V610 with a dual lens which has a focal range of 38 – 380mm (compared to a 35 mm camera). By dividing the focal range over two lenses, Kodak is able to equip a sleek digital camera of only 23.2 mm thick with a 10x optical zoom. The Kodak Retina dual lens technology is provided with two Schneider Kreuznach C-Variogon lenses which have to ensure a great clearness and visible focus.

Kodak EasyShare V610 - 10x Optical zoom

At the moment, Kodak is the only one that uses such a dual lens technology and the question is if and when the other camera manufacturers will apply something similar. There is competition in the field of compact 10x zoom digital cameras such as the Panasonic Lumix TZ1. This model is equipped with a similar 10x optical range, but is built in a housing of about 40 mm thick. Kodak has a unique concept at least and has, following in imitation of the successful Kodak V570, quickly introduced a second digital camera with a dual lens technology.

Kodak V610 - Bluetooh technology

The Kodak EasyShare V610 model is one of the first digital cameras to incorporate Bluetooth wireless technology, making it easier to instantly share pictures with people nearby. Kodak V610 camera owners can effortlessly send their pictures to other Bluetooth technology enabled devices up to 30 feet away, e.g., mobile phones, PDAs, computers, Kodak Picture Kiosks, and even other Kodak V610 cameras, as well as receive and view pictures on the huge 2.8 inch, high-resolution LCD screen.

Kodak EasyShare V610 - Perfect Touch Technology

In addition to its dual lens design and wireless capabilities, the camera includes multiple advanced features to enhance the photography experience, including Kodak Perfect Touch Technology. At the touch of a button, this innovative feature, previously available on Kodak printers and kiosks, or via lab processing, creates better, brighter pictures by bringing out detail in shadows without affecting lighter areas. It’s ideal for underexposed pictures caused by shooting beyond the flash range or in adverse lighting conditions.

This is the best small auto camera/camcorder there is. I was looking for a very portable camera / camcorder and found this is the best in the market so far. I have compared all the recent MPEG 4 cameras, including the new Nikon 3 inch lcd, the Sony and the Casio MPEG 4 cameras. The v610 panoramic stitching is flawless. You can not find any flaws where the 3 photos were connected even with Photo Shop zoomed in all the way. Amazing processing algorizm to connect the 3 photos in panoramic mode ! Photo quality is superb compared side by side with photos taken by a $2000 Canon camera. The color processing is great and works great in low light. Because it has a smaller flash compared to $2000 camera long range shooting is not as satisfactory compared to $2000 camera. To solve this problem I recommend a remote flash to sync with this camera. Also another problem like all other MPEG-4 cameras is that it uses proprietary battery. I have to make a 4x AA backup battery pack to fix this problem. Only Samsung makes a MPEG-4 camera that uses AA battery but my 10x Samsung camera did not come close comparing to the v610. Samsung has poor image quality grainy and poor color processing and alos you can not zoom in and out in video mode and it also does not adjust aperture well enough in strong light resulting in over exposed video. On the other hand the v610 takes very high quality video with excellent auto exposure and focus, except zooming is too fast becasue it is really designed for camera zooming and not camcorder zooming. Because zooming is runs so fast in video mode, video is more jerky and auto focus often lags a little. Kodak should slow zooming down in video mode to allow a quicker and smoother focus. This is my first purchase with Kodak and they got my confidence in their cameras. I have also purchased a v550 for $205 which works the same as this camera except it comes with less features 3x only but it is great for my wife who also does not use the paranomic function. From now on, I will seriously look at Kodak's cameras and not just Sony or Canon's. Comparing ultra portable MPEG-4 cameras both in functions and price, the Kodak v610 beats the Sony and the Canon cameras hands down and the image quality matches with the Sony and Canon's expensive cameras. Two thumbs up for a new Kodak progressive 2-lens 10x innovation ! It is not perfect but it is the best I have reviewed and studied. You will be thrilled with the v610 purchase.
